I noticed a lot of you saying that you're really shy. Even on the internet. I'm not even close to shy and am always trying to bring people out of their shells. So I thought I'd make this thread for any shy folks to introduce themselves, tell us what you're into or just be silly and have a few laughs. Just be yourself. Enjoy!

Yey! We are just so non-threaterning, and just about everyone's icon is Hannah so it just like 'Hey Hannah!' all the time! No but I used to be super shy aswell, until about half way through last year I realised that it was holding me back and it really didn't matter. With confidence there's a bit of faking it till you make it, but it's so worth it!

With confidence there's a bit of faking it till you make it, but it's so worth it! I'm like super shy in real life and I guess I am still shy on the internet, but not nearly as shy. I guess I am not as shy anymore in rl because of my time on the internet and learning to be myself, but even then I am quiet and prefer to be alone on my computer rather around people, or well large crowds. But if I were to go to a gathering of Hartosexuals or Nerdfighers I probably would have fun because I know for a fact I do have similar interests and I think my shyness comes from my fear of being looked down on because of my interests by people.

In person I'm not really shy, especially with friends and family. Around people I don't know my quietness often gets misinterpreted as shyness, when in fact a lot of the time I'm just observing people so I feel like I know them a bit better before I join in the conversation. I mainly rely on humour and cracking jokes in social interactions, and around people you don't know that's not really wise as it can lead to awkwardness if they don't have the same sense of humour!
Online I'm very shy as I always feel like I'm butting in people's conversations when I try and get involved in a fandom or whatever, which is why I usually lurk!

IRL I'm super shy, but I also hate it when things don't get done. So I force myself into situations I dread. Also, when I'm in a group of any kind, I have this urge to make sure that everyone is comfortable and happy and stuff. So I fake a lot of confidence, and engage in situations and try to involve the quiter and/or new ones to not make them uncomfortable. So most people think that I'm über-confident and a leader type person and like me to handle and plan things, which puts me in a situation I dread. But it also makes me used to it and I think I've shaked some of my shyness through that. Which isn't too bad. Or my pretending became so bad, that I fool myself... Internetwise I was always more confident, but still sorta shy. I lurk in the shadows a lot But once I started talking/writing, it's hard to make me stop

I used to force myself into those kind of situations too! That's what I meant by faking it 'till you make it! kolo: I'm definitely more shy on the internet (though I've really made an effort not to be on this forum) for the same reasons you are! I just feel like I'm being obnoxious if I try to give feedback or something... And I have a bit of a fear of being misinterpreted (as text can be hard to convey tone) which is why I write copious amounts.

I can sometimes be a bit blunt in the way I say things that can come across to some people as a bit unfriendly in text, so I try and make up for it with strategic use of smilies I think because everyone is so welcoming and friendly in this community it feels less like I'm butting in when I post on here. Some fandoms can feel a bit exclusive and inaccessible to outsiders. I actually did a research project for my Masters degree on online fan communities and wrote a bit about how online communities can create an environment in which some people feel unwelcome.

I just want to use all the smilies, but then they run the risk of being passive aggressive or annoying as fuck! This is true. Especially in places that demand content, and if, welp, you can't bring something good to the table, you're out. That would be an interesting project to read.

Smilies are great! I feel exact same way when it comes to fandoms. Also that sounds like a really interesting project.

That's actually really interesting because, as a shy person myself, I've felt that with some communities. Like, sometimes it seems like everyone else is in a really tight knit group and then I'm just there trying to put my foot in the door. I was actually anxious at first coming into this forum because I was scared it would be like that, but then everyone has been so great and friendly that I haven't been as shy as I usually am
